Desktop Devotional: Twelve
“Remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.” James 5:20
I learned from my devotion time that there is a sense of converting others to the Lord (the part we participate as disciples). There is also a sense in which men must convert themselves (the part we participate as seekers of God). Yet, there is the sense where ultimately only the spirit of God can convert men (God’s plan, seeker’s submission to it). The three ideals do not contradict, but they culminate the soul salvation process throughout scripture. Let us not confuse the preacher’s role for presenting the truth of the gospel, the sinner’s role in responding to that truth, and God’s sovereign grace for overruling, but sealing the process for converting a soul to Christ.
“Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers all transgressions.”
Proverbs 10:12
With the above said, I had to remind myself not to hate the sinner or the one that doesn’t look like he loves God. It’s difficult to do today, but we all are susceptible to emotions that can only result from an imperfect way of life. That is why believers are to trust God in all things, and repent as needed. Scripture continues to speak when it encourages those of us who believe God to pray for our leaders:
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
I Timothy 2:1-2
Saints, as we seek God daily for ourselves, let us help to lead others to know God, also. You cannot force others to see God as you see God, but you can participate in pointing them in God’s direction. Invite someone to church, say hello, show love to people through kind gestures and godly intentions. Let others see the God in you, as your represent Him wherever you go.
